2010 Photo Competition

The inaugural NBA photo competition was such a success last year that we have brought it back in 2010. This year the competition will be split into three categories:

1. Then what happened (two photos): two photos that show a situation and then what happened. I.e. Bob got his truck stuck and couldn’t go back or forward (pic 1). Bob had to get some guys to help lift the truck out (pic 2).

2. Staff at work

3. Lunch/picnic spot: a scenic pic that features your hives.


Raymond Huber named junior fiction finalist in the NZ Post children’s book awards

Congratulations to Raymond Huber and his book Sting which has been named as a junior fiction finalist in the NZ Post Children’s book awards.

Raymond Huber lives in Dunedin. He has been a social worker, gardener, primary school teacher, lecturer, and is currently a writer and editor. He's written Science and English textbooks and short stories for children. Sting, published by Walker Books, is his first novel.

Trees for Bees

To ensure the future of farming, everyone needs to play their part in protecting the honey bee. The bee is one of the hardest workers in horticulture and agriculture; about $3 billion of our GDP in New Zealand is directly attributable to the intensive pollination of horticultural and specialty agricultural crops by bees. In addition there is a huge indirect contribution through the pollination of clover, sown as a nitrogen regeneration source for the land we farm. This benefit flows on to our meat export industry through livestock production and sales.


New Zealand’s honey trade with US threatened by ‘honey laundering’

New Zealand’s growing honey trade with the United States is in jeopardy if Australian honey products are allowed into the Kiwi market.

The National Beekeepers’ Association of New Zealand (NBA) says Australian honey is being mixed with international honey and exported as an Australian product.

NBA joint chief executive, Gemma Collier, says if Australian honey imports are allowed into New Zealand, New Zealand risks becoming a ‘honey laundering’ hub, a situation that would severely damage our honey exporters.
