NZFSA consultation on tutin in honey

NZFSA has commenced consultation on its review of the Food (Tutin in Honey) Standard 2008.

Hard copies are being mailed to every registered beekeeper over the next few days and RMP holders will be either emailed directly or get hard copies if NZFSA lacks email addresses for them.

Whangarei Beekeeping Club - Saturday 3 June

Auckland Branch - Wednesday 7 July - 7.30pm?

Mobile phones causing bee numbers to decline?

NBA president, Frans Laas, was interviewed on Radio NZ on 2 June on the Afternoons with Jim Mora show. Frans and Jim discussed the decline of bees overseas and new research which suggested that mobile phones affect bees.

Honey bees in decline - Radio NZ - 24 May 2010

Kathryn Ryan from Radio New Zealand's Nine to Noon interviewed Dr Jeff Pettis (Head of the Bee Research Laboratory at the Agricultural Research Service - the research arm of the US Department of Agriculture) on the decline of honey bees in the US.

Honey seized from super yacht - 21 May 2010

An unusually large assortment of honey was seized by MAF Biosecurity from super yacht Eos at the Auckland port recently. The honey was sourced from a number of different countries: Australia (8 bottles), USA (3 bottles), China (10 bottles),Germany (5 bottles), Switzerland (2 bottles) and Italy (1 bottle). The honey was removed for destruction by a Quarantine Officer.

NBA joined forces with FFNZ Bees for Farm Day

The NBA joined forces with Federated Farmers NZ Bees on 28 March 2010 to educate the public on the importance of honey bees to New Zealand's ecosystem at Federated Farmers' Farm Day. Farm Day gave the public the chance to visit farms all over New Zealand.

NBA ward rep Maureen Maxwell teamed up with beekeeper Mike Bunter at the Duder's farm at Clevedon to teach the several hundred visitors about bees.

Mike, who has hives on the Duder's farm, and Maureen explained the value of bee pollination and educated Kiwis on what they can to do to support the beekeeping industry.


Hadda beetle found in Auckland

The Hadda beetle has recently been found in Auckland. The beetle predominantly feeds on solanaceous plants such as potatoes, tomatoes and aubergines.

As such it is unlikely to affect pasture or horticulture pollination. We will keep members informed of any updates.

Raymond Huber named junior fiction finalist in the NZ Post children’s book awards

Congratulations to Raymond Huber and his book Sting which has been named as a junior fiction finalist in the NZ Post Children’s book awards.

Raymond Huber lives in Dunedin. He has been a social worker, gardener, primary school teacher, lecturer, and is currently a writer and editor. He's written Science and English textbooks and short stories for children. Sting, published by Walker Books, is his first novel.
